Short Fiction Website

Hi everyone! I've been meaning to post on here about my website for a long time, but I wanted to wait until I had finished one of the major writing projects I was working on to do so. My progress on that front has been very disappointing these past few months, so I think I'll just do it now instead. There are still a couple cool short stories for you to peruse if they sound interesting. Plus, I recently updated the site so that the design will hopefully be more pleasant to the eye and lend it some additional atmosphere:

https://thedoldrums.neocities.org/

I'll update this thread if/when I ever make new stuff for the site!

I was thinking of adding some kind of mascot to the site. Some kind of moe anime sailor girl maybe, to fit with the theme. It should be cute in order to seduce people into browsing more. Do you guys think that would be too silly? I could also make some kind of logo/sigil/flag to represent the site. There used to be one on there but I decided I didn't like it.

Criticism of the site or its contents is, of course, welcome!

Ah, wonderfulwonderfulwonderful! I thought The Lost Perspectives was fantastic, second only to Ibryel as far as Aleister's contest was concerned! I do hope you write again eventually.

Like the QT girls you see in the corner of Pomf clones? That might be too distracting while reading your stories, but wouldn't it be uber moe if she was drawn cosplaying characters from the story you're reading? That sounds like a lot of work though, lol. And your style is seems too serious for that sort of thing. Perhaps, rather than "moe", a mysterious and sad sort of girl would be more fitting.

Took a while but it feels good to finally have this back up.

Welcome (again) to Erinnemori, a project catalog and knowledge sharing forum. I hope the website's look and feel can serve as a better introduction than I could do in writing.

Once more, this is all my own backend, and I'll be introducing features piecemeal as I go, feel free to use this thread for any sort of meta-discussion.

Long, long overdue, but we have a proper and nice looking thread catalog now. I didn't even have threads bump-ordered before.
It's always a bitch getting HTML/CSS to do exactly what you want when you have something ornate like this site, because it's !!!fucking stupid!!! being forced to do graphic design through a goddamn markup language.

What stops you from making?

In the thread discuss what specifically stop you from developing projects (besides necessary tasks like jobs and delays like power outages). You want to avoid things like difficulty and focus on purpose.

I'll list my own. Technical achievement was never an issue for me, people attracted to it are.

1. Associations and reputation. The microcelebs I encounter are fueled by self hatred. They see me as Jesus and they see themselves as Judas. It's destructive in ways they aren't aware of and to greater culture.

There's no chance in leaving a lasting legacy if there's baggage associated with you that no one asked for except those that want impose their identity upon you. I must be the perfected character that cannot have any embarrassment in the past nor future. There's too many loose ends.

2. Lexicon poisoning. Read too much online and even smart people have this. It's infectious, there's no preventative medicine. Infohazards are real in a sense, and they can end up with others categorizing your art or inventions. This makes whatever you make, even when it has "a reason for being" with a divine mandate (as opposed to an exercise as most projects are made) is seen on equal importance of a shallow marketed copy of something else. "You can't be yourself, you have to be a certain director, but at the same time you will never be that director."

This was supposed to be a sort of daily work journal for myself (or better yet, to find somebody else to collaborate with) so if anything I should be posting all the half finished things I've been working on.

¥says this before disappearing for three months.

Sorr~y, there's a couple reasons for that. Among them this dwarf-fortesque strange mood I caught working on a meatspace, like, /thing/, which is going quite well actually. Do pardon my secrecy.
However the weather'll be miserable in the coming weeks so I'll be posting regular updates here and catching up with people here for at least a while again...

5/Line Composition Software

While I was working on Juere, I could feel myself getting sick of programming, and I was stalling on drawing, so I figured I'd learn to compose music just to rotate onto something different. And if nothing else I'd at least have something less fa/g/gy to post about here. But here I am programming again so obviously something's gone wrong.

After playing around on a couple trackers and DAWs for a while and realizing I wasn't going anywhere I figured I'd study proper music theory, which meant using proper staff notation. Here's one of the first examples from the book I started with.

I spent a day or two trying to copy this down across a ton of freeware composition software and most of them kept trying to alter the notation or otherwise were just slow and annoying to use. So naturally, I have to write my own. Bleh.

Anyways, I got the first step towards that down a while ago, which was getting and abstracting over MIDI output on Windows 7. Targeting MIDI output over Windows 7, because what kind of sick masochist does audio work on Linux?
As for abstractions, I pretty much just went through what Stone's book introduces in it's Rudiments--Notes have a name C through A and an Octave, multiple notes can be blocked together in one "Spot", sharpened, flattened, dotted and tied separately from the key signature. So long as it can be turned into a MIDI signal it's the composer's problem to keep their notation neat and proper. I can do a proper didactic literate source code thing if someone would find it useful.

Some parsing for debugging sanity and it's good enough for me to move on to GUI work, which is what I've been working, more off than on, for the last couple of weeks. I haven't set up git on my windows machine yet but that should be coming shortly.

Obligatory Ideasguy Thread

For either ideas you intend to get to eventually, or just spitballing for it's own sake.

I said in the thread for Black Winged Angel I was thinking of doing some "short crazy touhou-like arcade thing" like it's just some offhand thing, but in actuality I've been daydreaming about a lot of the specifics of this surreal action game for a while now. But it's impossible to try and explain game concepts without context without sounding autistic, and I don't have the skill yet to show you that context beyond a few textual mood paintings I've written for myself, so it's just been percolating in my head for a while.
Wet hot sun hiding behind long thin clouds, old stone wet with dew casting pale shadows beneath an angel, spear and colt in hand.

Lately though, I've gotten sick of daydreaming about it and woke up the other day with a dream revelation to make a light romance game "for the hypothetical kind of girl who thinks 'He Is My Master' is the coolest thing ever" using Juere instead.

I think the appeal is obvious. Adapting the idea of "being an anime girl maid" into a job-game is intuitive enough, but the "light romance game" part is pretty open to interpretation. A gentle character-centric romance with slow day-by-day VN sequences would the obvious route, though I like the idea of a hectic, chapter driven game with lots of unique events and mini-games better.

In any case, that would also require "finishing" Juere Engine, but I think I want to make streamlined version of that whole project instead to force myself to really refine all the UI elements and developer tools. Meanwhile I've been replaying some Touhou games and thinking about how nice ZUNs simple 3D backgrounds look.

And a bullet hell game would also be something straightforwards to draw and write music for. So I'll probably work on something like that first just to refine everything before finishing Juere.

Along with some more obvious upgrades to Erinnemori (OP/reply previews in catalog, bump order, etc.) I wanted to write a shoutbox using the same CGI tricks as Refikyuru, but in retrospect writing CGI in factor was a mistake. The VM is just too fucking FAAAAAAT to host several live users at once, and only having 2GB of RAM on this server doesn't help matters.
One of the guys on the Heyuri webchat was showing off his custom fork of Wren. It's another one of many imperative, objected-oriented, scripting languages, but skimming the docs, it looks shockingly well designed for that style of language.

Black Winged Angel + Juere Engine

I've been trying to develop a game/engine by myself for a while, and I've finally gotten things down to a point where I'm not just constantly regretting not just doing things in some prebuilt engine.

Visually, my end goal is for the engine to have games look like Nippon Ichi's (Disgea) or Sting's (Gungnir, Knights in the Nightmare) DS/PSP era games; 3D tile based environments and props, 2D sprite characters. A potentially much more expressive amount of space to work with than pure 2D, while also striking a good balance with the limits of what a 1guy dev could reasonably manage. Right now I've just about got all the bones for a basic level editor and not too much else, but it's feeling pretty promising so far.

As for game itself, I originally wanted to do basic 3rd person shooter in the spirit of Elona Shooter just to have a tech demo out, hence the ripped Elona assets for characters (just like this website wwwwww), but I'd have to draw my own characters anyways to get all the necessary angles for each sprite, so I'm thinking might as well go all out and make some short crazy touhou-like arcade thing. I'll have to develop the engine a bit further before I get too far off on the ideasguy rails, but I already have some character concepts I want to play with once I do.

I think... A button that snaps the camera to the cursor or player character is in order. If the pc moves to a location with no tile, the lowest point you can fall to is ground level, rather than falling forever.

Here's a thread on my engine, if you ever got DM'd it.

Some notes:

1. It comes with a compiler and NPP. All you have to do is click All_Tools.bat and it'll open NPP opening every single widget and level .c file in the widgets and levels folders respectively (both in game-src). The bat file also opens the engine in debug mode.

descriptives.h

2. In game window press tab to toggle movement or widgets.

3. One of the widgets allows you recompile all widgets, compile a level name that you type in the blue text box, or descriptives.h (actor code that you have to tag actors with to get them to run it).

Further questions just reply to this thread.

A CGI-based imageboard I wrote during a week-long internet outage, I mostly (well, intend to, I haven't written much here yet) write about manga I've been reading and games I've been playing.

I'm pretty proud of how the CSS turned out and on the technical side the website automatically fetches new posts without any javascript...but it looks like I fucked something up with the HTTP header hack I used to get that to work and it's broken on Chrome. I'm pretty sure that's fixable, but I'm fucking sick of webdev for the minute.
